When I'm developing a story I start a new text file and a new sketchbook. Hatke: For me drawing and writing really mesh together well. He shared some of his sketches which you'll see throughout this post, including early work on the cover and doodles of creatures. I got a chance to ask Hatke a few questions about Zita, his artistic process, and role-playing games. Zita also runs afoul of the Doom Squad, a sort of interstellar police force that's something of a cross between Judge Dredd and the Three Stooges. We get a tiny bit more background about Pizzicato the mouse and Piper along the way. only to find that the robot double might be enjoying her life a bit much.īook Two is a good mix of familiar characters and new faces. But when a robot double shows up, Zita sneaks off for some downtime. After Zita's heroic actions in the first book, she's a bit of a celebrity, but she's not really enjoying the fame. The second book, Legends of Zita the Spacegirl, just arrived recently and it's a great follow-up. It's an action-packed sci-fi story with lots of crazy aliens and a little girl named Zita who gets sucked into an adventure. We discovered Zita the Spacegirl by Ben Hatke early last year and my daughters and I both loved it.

Reuven becomes Danny’s sounding board and his portal (if only intellectual) into a more liberal sect of Judaism. Oh, he shines at Talmudic arguments, but his real passion is something forbidden by his father. Danny is to inherit his father’s position as rabbi to the Hasidic community in which he lives, but Danny’s brilliant mind is entranced by psychology, not Talmudic studies. What entails is really as much Danny’s story as it is Reuven’s. Reuven ends up in the hospital, and Danny comes to visit him and the two become fast friends. The novel opens with a fateful baseball game in which Reuven is injured by a wild ball hit by Danny Saunders, the son of an Hasidic rabbi. Reuven and his father live in New York City, where the networks and neighborhoods of Jews are many and varied. It is the story of Reuven Malter, a practicing Jew, whose father is a teacher, writer, and later, political activist. The Chosen is Chaim Potok’s first novel, published in 1967. (I often don’t remember what I just said after I said it, much less something I read fifteen years ago.) I read Davita’s Harp many years ago as an undergraduate student, but I still remember some of the story, which must mean that it made an impression on me. I decided to read The Chosen after reading Janet’s review of Davita’s Harp. Chaim Potok‘s The Chosen certainly doesn’t need me to tout it as a great story, but I’ll put my thoughts here for my own benefit, if for no one else’s. I always have a hard time writing a review of a novel that really doesn’t need my stamp of approval. Taken along as seamstress and cook, she taught herself to hunt, shoot, and build skin boats and nursed the last of the men to die through the agonies of scurvy. At 23 years old, Ada was thrown into a situation for which she was completely unprepared. In the process, she tells, for the first time, Ada Blackjack’s story. Using unpublished notes, diaries, and interviews, Niven has turned that two-year ordeal into a compelling saga of suffering and survival. These characteristics are the main reason why, by the time a relief ship got through to the supposed colony in 1923, Ada was the only one still alive. Stefansson comes across in Niven’s book as manipulative, self-interested, and arrogant. In 1921, with poorly thought out ideas of colonizing an island for England, Stefansson sent Maurer, three other young men, and an Inuit woman, Ada Blackjack, to live on Wrangel Island off the Siberian coast. That aside has now matured into Ada Blackjack.įred Maurer was a martyr to Canadian explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson’s idea that the Arctic was a “friendly” place where anyone with a modicum of skill and imagination could prosper. In an aside to that story, Niven mentioned that one of the survivors, Fred Maurer, returned seven years later to the scene of the disaster. In the bestselling The Ice Master, Jennifer Niven chronicled the doomed voyage of the Karluk in 1913-14. This first book revolves around a prophecy that the world will be divide into two sides, basically your classic fight between good and evil. On goodreads, I rated it a 5/5 stars without a second thought. Malice by John Gwynne lives up to the recommendation.
